In the Water with Patrick Dangerfield

Geelong Cats superstar Patrick Dangerfield is currently ranked as one of the best players in the Australian Football League. His passion and dedication on the football field earned him the highest honour of the Brownlow Medal in 2016. Patrick is also a keen fisherman and boatie. In 2017, he partnered with his good mate and fishing guide Aaron Habgood (aka Red) to launch Reel Adventures fishing and lifestyle show. Reel Adventures is a weekly 1 hour radio show and podcast. During 2018 the show is running every week for the whole year, that’s 52 episodes or 520 hours of fishing and travelling adventures!

How long have you been playing AFL?

Ten years. I debuted in Round 20, 2008 for the Adelaide Crows vs Essendon.

Which AFL Teams have you played for and for how long?

I played for the Adelaide Crows for eight years from 2008 to 2015. I then got traded to the Geelong Cats where I’ve been playing for the last two years.

What are you most proud of in your career and what is the biggest highlight?

Proudest moment was playing in the return game after Phil Walsh passed away… The highlight was playing finals in front of 80,000 people.

What has been the biggest challenge?

Gruelling Pre-seasons.

We’ve heard fishing is one of your biggest passions but do you get much time to fish when the AFL Season is on?

Our Geelong schedule is pretty good which means I get out about once a week.

Your Reel Adventures radio show is growing rapidly, what has been the highlight for you of launching the show?

Sharing people’s experiences and passion of fishing when we have our Dometic Follow the Sun segment.

What are you looking forward to this year with the program?

Continuing to engage with our listeners through the show on air and also on social media, and hearing from our exciting list of special guests coming up throughout the year.

“I far prefer camping over staying in a 5-star hotel.”

What is your favourite fishing destination and why? (i.e. best place to go fishing)

Groote Eyelandt – you can catch absolutely anything!

If you could go anywhere in the world to fish where would it be and why?

New Zealand – Fly Fishing in the north would be fantastic.

Do you camp? What type of camping do you like to do and where?

I far prefer camping over staying in a 5-star hotel. I like to stay at a caravan park in my New Age Caravan! Mission Beach is my favourite camping destination.

Best tip or advice for when on the water/fishing?

Fish your tides and use burley, burley, burley!!!!

Do you think your Reel Adventures Co-host Aaron will ever share his top-secret fishing spots with you?

He seems to know all of the hot spots! I’ve given away a few of them throughout the show and I am hell bent on continuing that on Reel Adventures in 2018.

Is there a Dometic product that has “knocked your socks off” and why?

The Dometic Waeco CFX 50W is just so easy to use. It’s a convenient size. I can put it in the cabin of my boat, back seat of my car, it fits anywhere. It’s the Swiss army knife of portable fridges!
